Cape Reed’s Renovation Work

To maintain the charm and functionality of Las Dunas Park’s outdoor structures, Cape Reed was commissioned to renovate and upgrade the garden cabanas and beach bar. The goal was to restore beauty, improve durability, and preserve the natural aesthetic of the urbanisation.

Re-Thatching with African Reed

Cape Reed replaced the old thatch across 12 garden cabanas using premium African reed. A total of 22,700 bundles were used—each carefully installed to ensure the structures were both visually stunning and long-lasting.

African reed is known for its durability, natural insulation, and ability to withstand coastal climates, making it the perfect choice for this upgrade.

Upgrading the Garden Cabanas

The renovated cabanas now feature fresh, expertly installed thatch roofing that blends beautifully with the tropical surroundings. These upgrades give the gardens a revitalised look while providing cool, shaded areas for residents to unwind.

The Custom-Built Pergola at the Beach Bar

One of the most impressive upgrades was the transformation of the beach bar. Cape Reed removed the worn canvas awning and its metal frame completely.
In its place, they designed and constructed a custom wooden-beam pergola, creating a more spacious and inviting environment.

A semi-shaded roof made from eucalyptus slats now covers the area—allowing sunlight to shine through gently while maintaining comfortable shade. This design brought new life to the beach bar, making it not just functional but visually striking.

Sea Grill Restaurant, Puente Romano, Marbella, Costa del Sol, Spain

The Sea Grill Restaurant at Puente Romano Marbella stands today as one of the most captivating Mediterranean dining destinations on the Costa del Sol. With sweeping sea views, refined coastal elegance, and exquisite craftsmanship woven into every detail, this establishment has become a benchmark for luxury beachfront dining in Spain. But behind its transformation lies a remarkable story of architectural innovation, natural materials, and expert craftsmanship—one that redefined the essence of coastal luxury at the prestigious Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa.

In 2012, the venue that once existed here—the former Hotel Puente Romano Beach Club—had lost its charm. Its once-celebrated interiors had become outdated, weighed down by dark wood, deteriorating roofing, and a style that no longer reflected the world-class standards of the resort. A complete reinvention was needed. Cape Reed, in partnership with architects ATD34 and a dedicated building team, set out to create what is known today as Sea Grill: a modern Mediterranean masterpiece seamlessly blending natural textures, high-end design, and exceptional structural quality.

Modern Mediterranean Elegance

When the project began, the aim was ambitious: to transform an aging beach club into a vibrant, upscale Mediterranean restaurant that celebrates the breathtaking blue horizon of the Costa del Sol. Every aspect of the structure had to be reimagined—from the roofing and timber to the colour palette and its relationship with the surrounding sea.

The Sea Grill today boasts:

  • Panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea
  • A refined, whitewashed architectural aesthetic
  • A luxurious poolside bar and outdoor swimming pool
  • Elevated dining areas capturing the ambience of a modern coastal retreat

With its sophisticated architecture and handcrafted natural materials, the restaurant now aligns perfectly with the glamorous reputation of Puente Romano Marbella.

Clearing the Way: Removing the Old Heather Roof

The first stage of construction required clearing the existing structures of the aged and rotted heather roof. Years of exposure had rendered the material brittle, making the space unsuitable for a five-star resort environment.

Removing the deteriorated roofing involved:

  • Clearing all heather roof remnants and debris
  • Inspecting underlying timber structures
  • Ensuring structural reliability for the new roofing load

This phase revealed the true condition of the underlying framework and paved the way for the installation of a premium, long-lasting roofing material.

Reinforcing the Timber Structure for Heavier African Reed Roofing

One of the most significant challenges of the renovation was preparing the original timber structures to bear the weight of the new Cape Reed thatched roofing. This natural African material is renowned not only for its durability and insulation properties but also for its substantial weight—approximately eight times heavier than the original heather roofing.

To safely support this enhancement, the structural team:

  • Reinforced roof beams
  • Strengthened support joints and load-bearing points
  • Added structural brackets to increase stability

The upgraded framework was essential to support the luxurious, long-lasting thatch that would redefine the restaurant’s coastal appearance.

Installing Over 1600 Metres of Autoclaved Timber Battens

The installation of the African reed roof required precision and extensive preparation. Before the reed could be laid, more than 1,600 metres of autoclaved timber battens were fixed across all exterior roof sections. These battens provided the necessary foundation to secure the natural reed material and ensure a uniform, visually refined finish.

Key benefits of using autoclaved timber battens included:

  • Enhanced durability and moisture resistance
  • Protection against insects and decay
  • Extended lifespan of the roofing system

This structural layer formed the backbone of the new roofing and was integral to meeting Cape Reed’s high standards of craftsmanship.

Covering Seven Roofs with African Reed

The scale of The Sea Grill’s roofing transformation was remarkable. The project required covering seven separate roof structures with an impressive 180mm thick layer of African reed, renowned for its sustainability, resilience, and natural beauty.

In total, the installation used:

  • 27,817 bundles of African reed
  • Crafted, trimmed, and secured by master thatching artisans
  • Carefully layered to ensure a consistent 180mm depth
  • Designed to deliver longevity, insulation, and an unmistakable coastal aesthetic

The result was a series of elegant, natural roofs that celebrate the texture and warmth of traditional reed craftsmanship—perfectly paired with the modern Mediterranean architecture of Puente Romano.

A Whitewashed Timber Finish for Coastal Sophistication

To enhance the renewed structure, the wooden framework was finished in a clean, elegant whitewash. This design choice not only brightened the entire space but also created a visual harmony between the natural reed roof, the turquoise Mediterranean waters, and the resort’s luxurious styling.

The benefits of the whitewashed finish include:

  • A refined, modern Mediterranean aesthetic
  • Increased light reflection for brighter, airy dining spaces
  • A clean contrast with the natural, rustic reed roofing
  • Visual integration with the architecture of Puente Romano

This timeless finish now defines the signature look of Sea Grill.

The transformation of the Sea Grill Restaurant at Puente Romano stands as a testament to how natural materials, structural expertise, and architectural insight can reshape a space into something truly extraordinary. With its African reed thatching, reinforced timber structures, whitewashed finishes, and breathtaking sea views, this project has redefined the meaning of luxury dining in Marbella.

Why businesses on the Costa del Sol should protect their business with Cape Reed’s Fireshield

There is nothing quite as dramatic as a natural disaster and we’ve had our fair share of them throughout Europe over the last few years. In particular, wild fires, which have the potential to destroy everything in their path, displacing people and taking lives, including the brave firefighters who battle against the flames and suffocating heat.
According to the media Euronews.com more than 700,000 hectares of land have been affected by forest fires across Europe this year. This is the largest area affected by fires since records have been kept. Spain, in particular, has been badly affected with 283,000 hectares burned in fires. Not all fires are confined to inland areas, the slightest spark from a barbecue or a carelessly discarded cigarette can start a fire and burn anywhere.
Whether the initial spark is accidental or provoked, the results are catastrophic for many families and businesses. The fires are attributed to the extreme temperatures of the July heat wave across Europe. In the UK, even the central London region suffered several fires. Statistics provided by Planet Labs show that between January and 23 July, a whopping 515,475 hectares were destroyed.

Can beachside businesses protect against fire?

This is when we need to ask the question, “Is there anything that businesses on the Costa del Sol can do to prevent or at least slow the progress and limit the damage caused by fires?”. The answer is yes, it is possible to protect structures with professional fire-retardant treatments, such as Cape Reed’s Fireshield de Cape Reed.

Along the Costa del Sol the beaches are dotted with chiringuitos and beach clubs, from small rustic shacks to celebrity hangouts such as the Nikki Beach in Marbella. Apart from the superb beachside locations and fresh seafood dishes (one such chiringuito staple is sardines prepared on an open fire!), they all have one thing in common… the buildings are constructed using natural materials such as a wood, reeds and ‘brezo’. In the case of Nikki Beach, the venue has lots of wooden sunbeds, daybeds, thatch shades, pool bars constructed of wooden gazebos with thatch roofing.

All it takes is for one spark from the sardines and BBQ to be carried on a gust of wind for a fire to take hold. Obviously, no sane chiringuito owner is going to forego the BBQ to avert a fire risk, when they have queues of hungry customers who have been tempted in by the delicious aromas.

Laguna Village, Estepona

Of course, it isn’t only the rustic chiringuitos which are at risk of catching fire from a spark or nearby forest fire. An example of one of the most high-profile fires in Malaga province over the last few years is the Laguna Village shopping centre was razed to the ground by fire in 2020. All of the buildings including the iconic Polynesian style Tiki thatch roofs that characterised the complex were completely destroyed.

In retrospect, a tried and tested flame-retardant treatment such as Cape Reed’s Fireshield could have provided a modicum of protection, by making it much more difficult for a spark to take hold. The right protection may not have prevented the fire but it could have slowed its progress.

How Does Cape Reed’s Fireshield Work?

Cape Reed Fireshield is a unique fire-retardant coating which has been formulated to comply with all relevant international standards for flame resistance and prevention when constructing with natural sustainable materials. The treatment is verified every quarter to ensure that it reaches the correct fire-resistant standards.

Sustainable and Non-Toxic

What’s more, Fireshield is a water based intumescent coating that does not contain any toxic elements, making it kind for the user and also environmentally friendly.

In fact, the use of fire-retardant’s such as Fireshield are often required by insurance companies before full insurance cover is approved. This is because, although nothing is 100 per cent fireproof, it is possible to take steps to minimise the risk.

Accidents can happen, and most of the time all you need to do is grab a fire extinguisher, but Fireshield adds an extra level of protection.

We all would sleep more peacefully knowing that our investment property or holiday home is protected to the best of our ability and the insurance policy is in place!

Conclusion

Protecting your business on the Costa del Sol is crucial, and Cape Reed’s Fireshield offers an advanced and effective solution. Fire protection not only safeguards your property and assets but also ensures the safety of your employees and customers. With Cape Reed’s FireShield, businesses can benefit from a highly efficient, eco-friendly fire retardant that is specifically designed for thatched structures. Investing in this protection means peace of mind and a significant reduction in fire-related risks. Ensure your business remains safe and secure with Cape Reed’s Fireshield, and focus on what truly matters: growing your business.

Cape Reed’s renovation brief

The brief was to ensure the building and facilities are in keeping with La Zagaleta’s very high standards. Cape Reed, a company with a reputation as the ‘masters of thatching’, replaced the original Brezo roof, providing a bespoke sustainable wooden roof structure featuring natural reed thatch roofing.

It was necessary to replace the covered entrance walkway with a completely new wooden structure. Cape Reed removed the original roof cover to thoroughly inspect the wood structure, which was found to be correctly maintained and up to the correct standard. The next step was to install almost 500m² of natural cape reed thatching.

What is Cape Reed thatch roofing?

Cape Reed is one of the best thatching materials in the world. The a African Reed is grown for at least six years prior to harvesting, compared to other commonly used reeds, which are cut after only six months. The longer growth period provides greater durability, with higher resistance to rot compared to other natural materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does natural thatch roofing last?

The longer growth period before harvesting the African reed ensures its durability, stability and resistance to rot. When maintained correctly there is no reason why your Cape Reed thatch roofing should not last for at least 15 years.

How to choose the right thatch roofing style?

Once you have decided to go for natural reed thatch roofing, the next step is to choose the style of thatching. There are a number of different options, including African thatch, Island thatch and European thatch, as seen on English country cottages.
